This is literally the best beginners volume on detached math you lot tin can find. I have looked into dozens of dissimilar materials and this one is proved to exist the best. Very detailed and intuitive explanations, 2000+ exercises with answers in total. This is THE volume on Detached Mathematics!

By itself, I think this volume is lacking something. However, when read in parallel with Rosen's book (I know, 2 detached math books simultaneously is a recipe for insanity) information technology shows it'south truthful value. Epp explains some things very well but at the end of the day she'southward a math guru, and as with almost all math gurus I've encountered, she has difficulty packaging complex subjects into digestible, teachable chunks. She's better than Rosen, I'll give her that.

It'south unfortunate that the selection of textbooks is and so limited in this field. Every instructor that I've had for DM explains the subject better than textbook authors past a wide mile, merely writing i,000 pages on DM is probably too daunting a task for them and then their wisdom is never documented. Instead, nosotros go along turning to Rosen and Epp.

Oh well, it's only a class.

Clear and concise, few textual errors (in the latest edition) for a book of this size. Decent exercises. Would recommend every bit a relatively breezy introduction to proof-writing and select topics (logic, graph theory, etc.), potentially a good supplement for more than rigorous or challenging texts.

I don't read too many textbooks that are bodily textbooks, but this was a necessary read as I could not quite understand my professor's instructions. I really read this ane and fabricated a wonderful form in my graduate course because of information technology. I institute some concepts and problems to be too simple and other likewise circuitous for what I read in the chapter. This book is too wordy and non rigorous. The writer fills pages past explaining basic subjects that need only a paragraph or two. It's like written for IQ fourscore or less.

The entire content of this m pages book can fit nicely under 300 pages.
I am new to detached math, and I read one-half of this book in 2 days!

It's a shame that many classes apply this book. It seems a strong relationship happened between teachers and publishers.

The 5-star rating isn't for the whole volume (I didn't read all of it) but having listened to many online clownish debaters pretend to have a clue about logic, I'm glad such an accessible reference exists. Seriously, don't open plato.stanford.edu or some flashy looking YouTube video; 2.ane-2.3 of this text is great a source--with exercise problems--for grasping some nuts in propositional logic. I've been reading and doing problem sets from this book for near vi weeks now as part of a foundation course for a grad school program. I don't have much experience w/ this level of math just I observe this volume very interesting. Some things can exist unnecessarily complicated. I was sometimes dislocated by similiar names to depict different variables inside a problem. Why not simply use very distinct names? Every bit a instructor I would dearest this book considering of its tome-similar nature, but as a pupil I plant information technology a fleck annoying to only cover x% of the book for spending 50 bucks. In that location are books that teach proof techniques much more efficiently and cover merely what is important and reasonable for one semester. Also...this is called discrete MATH not information science!! I want math issues not how to write an algorithm.

Some may think information technology strange to give a text book 5 stars, but this book is brilliant. I read it over the intermission cover to cover. If you are studying programming and informatics, this book is invaluable. The writer's writing manner is then clear and careful. She seems genuinely interested in helping and inspiring students. Read this for my discrete maths grade. Actually pretty interesting (actually enjoyed taking notes for it, for in one case), even if a lot of it we didn't actually need in course. Brand sure you go the solutions manual, too. Read this for my discrete maths course. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I read it because I will teach with information technology. But I retrieve information technology is so nicely and well written that the students will enjoy it too. I am looking forward to teach with it. :)

Effort reading Section 7.5 and and then working problems 9-38. Those who gave this volume a glowing review are lying through their teeth.
